The Alphabet Affair is a decidedly adult project in that Jackie Billings stumbles into harm’s way because of errors in judgment involving physical relationships. Jackie is also, without doubt, a flawed character soon neck deep in consequences. The storyline has inspired spirited debate about reader tolerance for flaws, but I’ll argue that Alphabet is a cautionary tale, that Jackie is ultimately a heroic figure, and that her story becomes a riveting, twisting and turning thriller that allows the reader to ask: What would I do if faced with genuine crisis? How would my relationships be affected? Could we adapt and change?
